The Goat

From Songs of Zodiac

At home on the Alpine meadow and narrow glacial valley
where the wild winter curls and bites the wool
and summer's shade holds last year's frost.

They boulder down and around and scamperly
climb again. Only this most natural fool
drinks of mirror lake and eats the lowly moss.

Wary in the dell when snow's on the hill
When the wolf's whelps yelp for food
the pack fangs out, but the fool just plays.

Though the goat may feed the hunters in the rill
and lose a kid to the lupine crude
they rut again and are soon at graze.
