What you say above is well documented. Ernest Hemingway killed himself despite his success, as did Robin Williams more recently. Depression is quite common in everyone. The use of pain killers and anti-depression drugs has led to a plague in the use of heroin in populations that never would have thought they could be trapped in drug addiction–the white, upper class and middle classes to be explicit. Big pharma became much wealthier with 3.5 billion more dollars per year in the coffers from the sale of these drugs.

I stopped trying to be happy long ago and stopped looking for meaning in life before that. They are both fantasies. We are both miserable and ecstatic, so it is a matter of keeping a balance that many 'normal' people seem to have naturally. Of course, there are no normal people. The average is just a line on a chart.

What changes, you ask, to make us more content with out lot? The answer is the chemicals that create moods. The answer is the maturity that creates chemical change. Sooner or later, we realize that the experience is all there is. We realize our lot in life is 150x300 and become content with that and see the humor in it.

None of us are the same, thankfully. Our separation is what makes us unique.

So you are a good writer?  Then write. You are a good ambulance driver? Then drive.

Helping others always takes us away from ourselves and our absurd reaction to who we are. It is at the point when we dislike ourselves the most that we should get away from ourselves as fast as we can. There are lots of ways to do this. We simply need to pick the way that is best for everyone including ourselves.
