"the division of the world into countries is becoming obsolete." I agree and it's interesting to see that a century ago passports were not necessary to travel within Europe. From Wikipedia " In the later part of the nineteenth century and up to World War I, passports were not required, on the whole, for travel within Europe, and crossing a border was a relatively straightforward procedure. Consequently, comparatively few people held passports [..] Most countries issued passports but countries that demanded travelers have a passport were considered backwards". We might go back to that in the future and not just in Europe. You haven't metionned languages. Although patriotism would still exist if there was only 1 language, it wouldn't be as strong in my opinion. Like your small kids being divided into 2 teams, languages are a natural way of dividing people in multiple groups. One more reason I think to make sure children are taught multiple languages so that they don't feel part of only 1 group once they're adult.
