Elaine M. Mullen GreenOgress
Dear Melony,

I am glad and also sorry to read your article. I didn't read what all that you describe about the media outpouring/reactions after both incidents!  I was saddened by them both. One would think a Gorilla pit should be impregnable and no child find their way in there! I am ashamed for my race to think the parents received death threats and their past was smeared all over the news, when it was a tragic accident that SHOULD NOT have happened!  One would think a Gorilla pit is impregnable and NO child be able to find their way in there!   I  was more alarmed by ANY parent in Florida foolishly allowing their unattended 2 year old to wade in an "off limits" pool at night (there are crocodiles on golf courses down there!) & take their eyes off them!  Neither animal was to blame, neither child either. The reactions were NOT the same, and that is a DISGRACE!

Both incidents send a VERY jaded message on the state of human rights, worth and equality in our nation.....and I'm not proud of it. It's as though the Civil Rights Movement NEVER happened, for crying out loud! Today, Justice Sonya Sotomayor said that "racial profiling in our police state IS going on and should NOT be overlooked and allowed to continue". Not in those exact words, but that was her CLEAR, accurate message!)!  I am appalled at the George Zimmerman auctioning off his gun affair! That psycho should NOT be allowed to sell it! I don't know HOW he was acquitted! It will set a VERY dangerous precedent if he is allowed to sell it!   I grew up in the 60's and saw it all unfold on TV, and yet, you would be shocked at how many young white people and even middle aged whites I spoke to thought "Selma" was a movie about a woman!  I am very dismayed. These are just my sentiments. They make no difference or change any of the past events. But, I just felt compelled to comment! Elaine
