Portrait of a Secret Agent
This is chapter 2 of my biography of Brian Giffey, a colourful and loyal British intelligence agent, who fought bravely in the First World War and was badly wounded in 1915.
I write biographies, but some people say I should write up my own life because I arrived in England from the Soviet Union and therefore absolutely everything was new and unusual to me. That was a long time ago. Since then I have worked in the wholesale wine trade and for the BBC. An optimist and enthusiast, I very much like the three men whose lives I have researched, all combining Britain and Estonia in some way. Estonia is where I was born and where I still have strong ties, running an annual essay competition to encourage independent thinking.
