At one time I belonged to Critters, writers who critique each other in the field of Sci-Fi and Horror stories. After several months I saw a pattern forming. Many of the authors addressed moral or ethical issues, but had no idea whatsoever of how to provide a solution. This opinion is too short to give examples. Western culture has adapted the concept of relativity to apply to all walks of life. This is causing great problems when dealing with moral and ethical issues. Truth can't be relative. Changes in society's normative behavior shouldn't change the reality of truth.

When one studies what morals are really about, you find that things like not stealing or killing or kidnapping should be consistent throughout history.  You can say, "He's a bad person so I can steal from him." That is not a justification. When storytellers are dealing with corruption or other crimes against society, make sure that your solution is universal. If not, it is a joke.

I won't have written this if I hadn't seen many authors attempting to deal with a moral or ethical issue and fall on their faces at the end of the story. What was your purpose in pointing out a problem if you don't have an answer to it?

I have studied ethics and morals for many years and if any author has a problem with coming up with solutions for your protagonists then contact me and I can help. Contact me: Dr. Barry Nadel agecotec711@gmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you.
