Short Book Review of Madame Bovary

A must read for those preparing for marriage...

In the heartbreaking saga Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, two generations of unhappy women in dysfunctional romantic relationships during nineteenth century France are depicted.  The psychological damage that these women have endured either as a result of their upbringing, society or both leads them to neurotic, extreme behavior that, ultimately, has dire consequences.  The antagonists to these women are the simple-minded, dominant male providers represented by husbands, lovers, fathers, and other figures in the community.  While there are intermittent moments of bliss, prosperity and harmony, Flaubert adeptly writes about universal themes of inequality, altruism and narcissism.  A must read for those preparing for marriage.  – LB Lewis
