Last night I watched that documentary by Spike Lee “If the Lord’s Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise” it was about the aftermath of Katrina and the rebuilding of New Orleans. I remember a lady from my church was from New Orleans and had lots of family still there!  When Katrina tore through that iconic city leaving total destruction in it’s wake she had like twenty people living in her house!! They all  came to church the Sunday after the storm and from my advantage point in the choir they all looked good and healthy and happy!!! There is a point in our services when we who are in the choir come down and welcome our visitors with a hearty handshake, smile, and heartfelt welcome to Blueridge! This Sunday was no different plus we were overjoyed to welcome Linda’s good-looking family from New Orleans!!! I came down from choir stand and began shaking hands and trying to be as sincere and friendly as possible. I see this young man he looks to be in his late teens early twenties and he is tall. Now I know tall I am tall! I am 5'71/2" barefooted!  I have a brother who is 6'2 or 3" and my youngest brother is 6'6" so I know tall and this young has to be at least 6'5"!! So I reach to shake this young man’s hand and he collapses on me crying.  I hope someone sees us and comes to my rescue but no one comes!! The weight of his body nearly knocks me down we are standing next to a pew so I guide him to sit down and he just continues to sob!! I don’t remember exactly what I said to him but I do remember apologizing saying something like, “I am so sorry this happened to you but you are safe now!!!” Males can be strange creatures they can be so emotional but they can dry those tears abruptly!!!  As a woman I may need more crying time! He abruptly dried those tears and I go back to the choir stand! After church I look for him but as in true male form he is done maybe a bit a shame!!! I whisper a prayer that  he will never experience anything like Katrina again!!
