The concept of objectifying women is ancient. So many people, men and women alike, have fought and produced many campaigns against the idea of society treating women as though they are objects. Many of which have reached overwhelming success, in the sense that women are jumping over career hoops that men simply can not and becoming the new idea of an American hero. However, I sit here at my university, looking at my peers and the media, and all I see is these women looking for the wrong kind of attention, looking to be lusted over.
And here I am screaming on my blog that we were not created to be lusted over.
We are surrounded by so many Kardashians right now. This family came together through sketchy means and founded an empire solely based on their appearances and sensuality. I mean sure they have their businesses and apps, but the strongest asset that the Kardashian family has is their ability to invite lustful thoughts with everything they do, right? The issue that I have with this is the fact that my peers are looking at these Kardashians and think that they too should be valued for their sensuality, and sensuality alone. They thrive to find their success in being sexy and feel as though they are only valuable if people lust after them.
In addition to the many Kardashian like figures that are promoting the lifestyle of making success out of lust, there is an uprising of women empowerment and feminism. The concept of feminism and empowering ladies to do and be whatever they want is wildly amazing. However, this wave of girls saying and thinking “I can dress provocative, tease boys, and act impure because that is what I want,” is suddenly emerging into our culture as well, which is ridiculous. Dressing and treating yourself like an object even though you say it is because youwant to, still objectifies you. It is almost worse because instead of others treating you like you are an object, you are treating yourself like you are one.
Attention is so much fun though, right? For some reason it is amazing to be called sexy or to have others want you. Trust me, I am no stranger for the longing of attention, good and bad; send the spotlight my way always. However, it grows into something of an unhealthy habit and creates this culture of humans that only know how to exist when they are wanted.
As a last plea to you readers out there, I say “you are spoken for”.
God loves you so big, that is one of the first things, just about everybody is taught in regards to being a Christian. However it takes forever for people to really realize how great the love is and really dwell on the fact that nothing will really change His feelings for them. With that being said, striving for low quality attention and inviting lust from low quality people in whatever season of life is pointless because you are already spoken for. You have the overwhelming attention of this great being always. You don’t need much else.
In addition to the Prince of Peace who has an overwhelming admiration for you, you are also spoken for by yourself. Your body and image is not something of a temple, it is the house that you grew up in, so treat it with an innocent , soft, and guarded heart. You are the only owner of that home, so don’t burn it down by inviting lust to the door every time you want attention.
I challenge you to perhaps stop before you buy the classic slutty nurse outfit this Halloween, stop talking to people who only see you with lustful eyes, and treat your image with a pure heart. It is incredibly hard, however, with doing so, we create an amazing image for women all over the world; an image where we don’t rely on lust for our success and can exist even when The Lord and ourselves are the only ones loving ourselves. Invite people who see your wisdom, humor, and compassion to your door. Know that you are absolutely loved by this great God and by me.
Much Love + Blessings,
