Do NOT Disturb the Reader!

Shhhh…… I’m reading.

Reading is more than examining a series of written words to gain understanding. It is more than examination for knowledge. Reading is engagement with an entirely new life or world. Reading is a journey of the mind; it is an adventure of the imagination.

We enter this mental transmigration when our eyes send line after line of previously-memorized inscriptions from a page or screen to the brain, and those shapes align to become thoughts, characters, actions, dialogue, plots, counter-plots, heroes, villains, champions, confrontations, contemplations, commiserations, and myriads more ad infinitum.

Reading is the promenade of an author’s creativity paraded across our consciousness. We, the readers, are not simply engaged in some distant viewing vagabondage; we are caught up as members of the cast. We are intertwined with the chronicle as it unfolds. We weep in tragedy, howl at injustice, shake in fear, burn with desire, and shout in triumph along with our newfound story-family.

Reading is not the static observance of written verbiage. It is total immersion into the adventure. It is living within the narrative. It is quickened breathing when lovers first kiss. It is our heart pounding as we watch the struggle for life and death. It is the mental and emotional connection that holds us in a grasp so tight we must remind ourselves to breathe, and only then after the conflict is resolved.

Reading is a vital and life-giving bond to another living world. Dare we sever such a bond for trivialities? Do we understand what transpires when a reader is suddenly and callously interrupted?

To disturb a reader is to pluck them, roots and all, from the middle of another life, and such indiscriminate invasions cause damage. What will happen while we attend to real life’s business? How long will the hero dangle at the end of the last sentence while we confront matters of everyday importance?

Always allow a reader to make their own break from reading. Only those submerged into a sojourn with the imagination can accurately choose a safe place to pause and disconnect. The reader must allow adequate time and space for parking the parable at hand, and landing safely back into reality. Such a monumental shift between two universes cannot be accomplished with undue vigor, and sometimes not at the end of a chapter.

Shhhh…… I’m reading. Can you handle the cause of your planned interruption yourself? Please, do so. The shifting fortunes of another entire world hang in the balance.

What is reading To YOU?
