A new novel reenacts the Dark Age events of Tristan and Isolde a 1970's criminal setting.
Since romantic medieval mythology was an area of interest to me at university, the notion of taking Tristan and Isolde, reappraising the characters, and relocating them in the 1970's was something that appealed to me — not only for nostalgic reasons but also curiosity's sake. Having just read the novel, I also understand that I revelled in this central conceit by writers Andrez Bergen and Renee Asher Pickup. This could easily have misfired, yet did not. The story was by turns gripping, funny, and still tragic. Highly recommended.
