Pray, God's children, pray

Pray, God's children, pray

Pray, God's children

Pray, God's children

Pray, God's children, pray

And that means all of us

That means all of us

Pray, God's children

We're all His children

Pray, God's children, pray

I woke up this morning singing this simple little chorus straight out of my dream. I don't remember why I was singing it in the dream. I don’t think it is a warning. Probably came because I went to bed conscious of two particular things I need to pray about.

Some years ago, my prayer life became derailed by a brother who was the leader of a group in the church. One of the members in our group became progressively ill. She was a young woman. We were all very concerned about her. Lots of prayers were said, but she continued to deteriorate. I didn’t know the circumstances of her life, but I was a new Christian and in a very spiritual place at that time and it came to me that there was an unresolved issue in her life that needed attention. I spoke to the leader about this particular concern and he agreed that a small group should go to her home and have special prayers. If we could, we would help. I was convinced that this would help her, maybe not to get better but her peace of mind while she was still alive.

I didn’t know this young woman or her family well enough, and didn’t have enough confidence to just barge in on my own. For one reason or another, our visit got put off, and she died shortly after. Much later, I learned that there had indeed been a family issue that needed attention.

When I told the leader that I was sorry we had not visited her because I felt I had been given a message and believed that our special prayer and perhaps intervention would have helped her; among other things, he told me something that sent me reeling. He said that God had probably prevented our visit, because sometimes people (like me) get over confident that they can hear from God, and who was I to think that my prayer would have helped her. God, he said doesn’t want anybody to believe that something special happens because that person prayed. Nobody has more power to reach God than anyone else.** Then he quoted: Matthew 6:5
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full."

I have no idea why the leader chastized me in this way. Maybe he thought I was being pushy about a 'message' which had not been given to him. took me a while to get past him.

**Nobody has more power to reach God than anyone else.**that statement by itself made sense to me, but not the rest.
