I wrote this poem to address the viral spread of cyberbullying. Our young people are most vulnerable to this contagion, and their lives are being infected by — and in some cases tragically lost to — public abuse and shaming. The internal struggles they face are real and we need to take notice.

Sticks and
stones
may break my
Bones
read the clues they hurl words from tele-
phones
school rhymes don’t mean a thing to me
Sticks and stones are never the
convention
forgot to mention
newer inventions
Death by social media is
swift
and I don’t mean Taylor
need my — inhaler
can’t "Shake It Off" — not
#ashtagMOD enough for their
#ashtagSQUAD
car screeches to a halt outside the
House
maybe his
diagnosis and
prognosis
would find a cure for this
insanity
internal agony
my soul needs amnesty
#ashtagFAT #ashtagFUGLY is my
crime
feel like I’m doing time
whenever I go online
358 friends on Facebook but the
muzzle of Pappa’s .38 Special knows me
better
I wrote a letter
left it in the drawer next to Eddie Vedder
Wish I could have been the star in your
sky
will go black when I pull the trigger don’t know
why
I waited this long so good-
bye
