this is one of my favourite poems; it is inspired by a tom waits song. i wrote it for my wife on our first wedding anniversary. the traditional symbol of the first anniversary is paper, so i printed it on a thick blue sheet. in a simple wooden frame, it stands by our bathroom sink.

When I fell into the ocean

You became my wind

Bet everything on the sea

To undo all I did

You hold the wild blue sky; boys do foolish things

You turned the night into water, and the water into wine

Pretend that you were nothing

When the whole word was green

On the brink of the cold waves when

The whole wide world was obscene

The face forges the mirror

The world forgives the cloud

You had the answer before I had the question

But you waited anyhow

Maybe when our song is over, diamond on a string,

The band will play it one more time and we'll raise our drinks

Pretend that you are nothing

And all the words were empty

I think about the cold days when

The hole in the world was me

The moon is a yellow sliver

A gold ring in a pool of wine

It's a love that you will kill for

And the whole wide world is green

The earth rises up from under me; my feet on rocks at last

Pray it will soon be dry, except for the dew on the grass

Pretend you're only noticing

That the whole world is a dream

We can drink to the old days when

The whole wide world was green

The earth rises up from under me; my feet on rocks at last

Pray it will soon be dry, except for the dew on the grass
