Three hours into an eight-hour journey

Tiredness burdens me

I fear I have erred

The single-track road bends, dips and rises

I'm surrounded by dense woodland

Overhanging branches, like arthritic arms

Darkness owns the sky, seconded by rain

My eyelids flutter, heavy and sagging

My body clock protests

I must fight the urge and continue

Rain falling harder, visibility dwindling

The night is most foul

I'm so tired

I can't afford to rest

Time is of the essence

The road is empty

I'm in the middle of nowhere

Dark country

Desolate

My eyes close ...

I jump with a start

The car is veering towards a ditch

I pull away just in time

Luck is on my side

A close encounter

I stop the car

A momentary breath

Calm ... keep calm

The weather has worsened

I feel so cold

I must push on

The radio, of course

Music to help keep my eyes open

I turn on the radio

News on the hour

An accident

A death

A car just like mine

Registration ...

A chill runs up my spine

Across the nape of my neck

This is crazy!

Madness!

A terrible mistake

The only explanation

I look in the mirror

I'm not there
