When I Feel Selfish

A sonnet about living in pain

When I am tired and in exhausting pain
I do not think of any of my fellows
When I am weary, ache til I'm insane
It's first and last the pain-until it mellows

When I feel fine I am a decent one
I care about and can care for another
For people special things can then be done
But when I'm sick, I only want my mother

I want to learn to act and be much better
To think or others when I've had a pill
To care for them when tiredness is a fetter
To be a force for good although I'm ill

When I am down, I want to be as good
As when I'm up, I realize I should
