I killed a man today.

I close my eyes as I right next to him lay.

A rat crawls onto my thigh,

But I’m too spent to chase it away.

The smell of death in this ally

Hangs so heavy, it compels me to stay.

The rodent too is overcome

And scurries away.

I fall asleep,

Using discarded filth as a pillow.

Even in my dreams,

Guilt causes me to wallow.

I hear a subway speed train

Hurriedly escape the crime scene down below.

The feeling in my heart

Runs parallel to the fading look in his eyes – they’re hollow.

The fabric of my dress gets heavy

From his blood flowing and settling into its fibres.

Nobody passes by;

Fate denying us witness for hours upon hours.

Morning comes.

From factories nearby, I smell brewing fires.

Must get home…

I arrive in my cold shack

To find that there’s been an electricity trip.

Guilt continues to beat me

With her tireless emotional whip.

For the first time,

I taste the blood where he bit my lip.

I feel the bruises

Where he squeezed me around my hips.

People will always prey on loneliness –

Sometimes we’re too desperate to be wary.

I will take a cold bath today,

Iron out my uniform

And go to work as usual.

I will do so for the rest of my life,

Because nobody knows and nobody cares.
