The flames of tiny demons burned me all the way to the empty pit that used to be my stomach. I swore I was on fire, alive, but it was just the coffee again. I don’t know that it will ever get old, this. Standing in the kitchen disheveled, trying haphazardly to remain as quiet as I can just to hear my favorite sound. I leaned my back against the counter and waited. It felt like an eternity when all of three minutes had passed, and then, there it was. Even in your sleep, you are unwholesome and lost without me. That sound gives me thousands of reasons to slip out of bed and let this coffee scorch my insides every morning. The sheets rustling in between your legs, although satisfying, are nothing compared to the untangling of your left arm and moving it over the empty spot I slept in all night. You’re searching for me, feeling your way around the darkest rooms behind your eyelids until I hear your voice crackle the, “good morning” I so desperately live for. I would burn for centuries just to hear one of those again.
