The congregation sat expectant, leaning forward...anticipating...waiting
As the pontiff in ecclesiastical garb sauntered in, inspired...freshly inebriated with the Holy Spirit
In his wake unleashing silence as thick as the holy book lying on the wooden pulpit
An impatient cough rattled somewhere in the colossal cathedral
A conflicted child's shriek answered in belligerent protest
Across the pew a goateed octogenarian dozed
Or his rheumy eyes glued in meditation
Another loud, rancorous, cough, thick with phlegm exploded at the front pew
The choir stood, the pianist strake a note, the guitarist stroke a tune, the drummer banged passionately
Alleluia...alleluia...alleluia... we joined in the heavenly psalm
Eyes tightly shut...bodies swaying...arms outstretched heavenwards, we sang loud...we wept prayers
We praised and worshipped and prostrated before HIM on high
Calling upon the LORD, we wept our hearts out
As holy fires furiously blazed...consuming
Unleashing a dose of collective conviction for sins unspoken
A tortured scream tore through the chorus of worshipping voices
"I repent...I repent...I repent for bloody hands stained with seed of the womb"...she was beside herself in grief
At my right a young man toppled over..."please forgive me for acts of indecency behind the veil of darkness"
Banging her blossom passionately, the woman at my left promised never again to visit the village witch
While another voice from behind swore to return all illgotten gains to owners robbed
Another confessed her gossip days were in their deathbed
Only for a pitiful groan to obfuscate her voice as another soul swore his days if philandering were now crucified with Christ
How could my soul withstand untouched?
My spirit groaned within me...
My heart into a billion guiltridden pieces disintegrated
As a reel of a life carelessly lived passed before my eyes
The lies...the drunkenness...the illicit liaison...the self righteousness...the hypocrisy
My sins stood before me in 3D clarity...in their obscene ugliness...oh, What a horrid stench!
Suddenly the drums stopped...the piano tunes faded...the guitar ceased...the voices deeped
A divine hash enveloped the cathedral
The wizened pontiff intoned a benediction...
Amen...amen...amen...sporadic outbursts of souls released from Luciferian darkness
Into gentle hands of The Rock Of Ages
Yet...without the cathedral, the cycle, stealthily was stealing in
Pride...a careless whisper...pretended alleluias
O...what clowns of God we were. Are
Yet, forever we wonder the reason for the cold alleluia
And the heavens enduring silence.
