To dream is to achieve. But sometimes, the American Dream is not for everyone.

Live spoken word performance of the poem "American Dream".

I was told I could reach the stars if I work hard enough

That to make it, all I had to do was believe that to dream is to achieve

But they failed to mention in the fine print

That as I reach, they’ll try and cut my arms off

Democracy, freedom to speak, freedom to believe

Words like poisoned honey

Teasing my palates of something to come so sweet

Only to have the venom slowly travel through my veins

The American Dream turned into a nightmare

With every step up I take, I’m pushed down

You can’t come up here you’re a woman

You’re colored

You hail from the land of the other

You can’t come up here, you’re not like us

But continue to dream

Because it’s not us who are stopping you

Oh no, you’re just incapable

Unqualified

You dream too big

Next time make them fit your own size

My dreams turned into a haunting reality

Every time I stepped into an office “Hello, I’d like to apply…”

They stare as if I’m a walking sin

Walking down the street, people and police do a double take

Because of a headscarf or last name, I earn a second pat down by the TSA

You’re not like us

But continue to dream

Dream but keep your voices hushed

Dream so that it can be crushed

Dream but remember for it to become real, you have to become like us

So don’t tell me we live in the land of the free and brave

When we are all being turned into cowards and slaves

Don’t tell me we live in the land of opportunity

If the only opportunities I get, are when I give up my identity

I was told I could reach the stars if I work hard enough

But they failed to mention in the fine print

That they’ll try and suck my soul out

If this is the price to make it amongst the stars

Then I’d rather stay standing, till my feet are covered in scars
