We all know that circumstance in life absolutely colors the reactions and perceptions of the individual. I live in an impoverished small southern town. This is in a small way an example of the experience I've somewhat had, as well as what I see other people clearly experience here every day.

We hear the sirens

coming

from far way

at first

The sound becoming

deafening

as they near

our street

A volley of

scenarios

runs through both of our minds

 as we wonder

what the hell

is going on

and where the vehicle

will stop

We wonder if our

freedom

will be stolen in some

new way

today

The men in blue

whiz past

the dilapidated houses of

our neighborhood

as people

cower

sometimes in darkness

as if we were rats

quietly awaiting our

extermination

Our crimes were never

truly

crimes at all

yet the gain coming

from our persecution is

irresistible

for many

For us the impoverished

the destitute

the deviant

the different

all scum to the powerful

people

drawing our future

with golden pen

For us the impoverished

the destitute

the deviant

the different

sometimes quake

and sometimes fight against

faces of "justice" wearing crooked uniforms

faces of "righteousness" glaring down at our souls

hoping

today is not the day

our twisted broken system

steals our livelihoods

away

An ambulance hot on the

pig's heals

floods us with relief as we realize that

it was a car accident

instead

Surely those involved

will be okay

we say

just thankful for another day
