Midnight Fear

The midnight hour arrives, a dozen lonely tolls

I walk through the park, a solitary soul

Surrounded by trees, branches withered and bare -

I wonder: Should I proceed and handle with care?

Foolishness persists and my legs push ahead

Ignoring the stories, I've been constantly fed

They say there's something wrong with this place

Tales of the strange, things one dare not face

Stubborn old me, a resolve like cold stone

Along the dark path, determined and alone

Minutes they pass and further I go

Through the dense mist and a fluttering of snow

From out of the gloom a sprawling calm lake

Rumours of drownings, three broods it did take

Nothing is there, water perfectly still

I see no manifestations to cause a great chill

Onward I go, my heart steady and bold

A shake of the head at the lies I was told

The park is serene, saturated in dark

There's nothing to fear, a foolhardy lark

Talk of phantoms, dead kids and ghouls

A basket of lies, paper-thin fools

Now I come to the antiquated maze

I stop at the entrance for a momentary gaze

This is the place where they payed me to dare

To pass through its gates to see if I scare

I have no qualms, no fret in my soul

I'll enter this place with a leisurely stroll

First, I turn left, followed by right

This is easy money; the end is in sight

The core I soon reach without any mishap

No scares to unnerve me, not even a trap

I take out my camera to show them the proof

A press and a flash, no refuting the truth

Task almost done, one last thing to do

A glance at the image to see if it's true

I look at the screen, all crisp and so clear

Three dead children ... wet, smiling ... my heart stops with fear ...
