A song for my friend Ed Asner

To speak out when silent is safe

To risk comfort of position

To use one’s voice as a man

Not beg for a permission

To rail against injustice here

To cast stones at tradition

The ethos of the activist

Brings truth forth to fruition

          While the truth isn’t pretty

          The lie is uglier still

          The liar is the ugliest

          They use untruth to kill

          While truth no medication

          The lie a bitter pill

          Which offers us sedation

          When we should be volatile

No rest for the wicked

Should wickedness persist

No peace for the virtuous

Where evil does exist

No hope for the hopeless

When the hopeless are dismissed

No voice for the voiceless

Without the activist

To stand up when one’s legs are weak

To muster up the strength to speak

To posit hope in a world bleak

To face the withering critique

To smite the strong to help the meek

To find in each that thing unique

To foster trust in those who seek

To reject Realpolitik

No rest for the wicked

Should wickedness persist

No peace for the virtuous

Where evil does exist

No hope for the hopeless

When the hopeless are dismissed

No voice for the voiceless

Without the activist

For Ed Asner with respect.
