Still Waters

I wrote this nearly thirty tears ago, inspired by.... someone I knew.

I am drowning.

I merely dipped my toe,

In water, inviting, clean, and pure,

The sun reflecting gold,

I’m sure you understand,

The attraction.

I am drowning

So close to shore who knew

The water would be so deep

Or the current so strong

And who could predict

The undertow.

I am drowning.

I try to reach the shore,

but the more I struggle,

the further I feel from safety,

And I am numbed by,

The cold.

I am drowning.

The ripples fade above me,

The surface still once more.

The water seemed so clear,

I really did not expect,

The darkness.
