A lyrical examination of the vagaries of faith.

They tell us to cleave unto him

Are not we cleaved in twain

By the fact that human whim

     Defines divine domain

On our knees to sing the hymn

    To the immortal slain

A notion that we choose to limn

     In a manner profane

The dying prophet truly grim

    To God we’re inhumane

Divinity upon the limb

     Humanity insane

With the current must we swim

     No questions entertain

The worship of a pseudonym

      Promotional campaign

Hopeful in the interim

      Eternity obtain

Desire large but chances slim

     One’s loss another’s gain

Only off the cream to skim

     From reason then abstain

Blinded by the holy glim

     It’s so hard to maintain

Bring us together you fissure of men

For in your name we’re rent asunder

Your church is but a fixture of men

Determining whose thumb we live under

Give a man a fish

For a day he eats

Limits are defined by the supply

Teach a man to fish

To the shore he beats

No longer upon others to rely

Give a man a wish

From reason he retreats

Rarely does a life thus simplify

Call man devilish

To hell his soul escheats

The gift of endless torture from on high

Bring us together you fissure of men

For in your name we’re rent asunder

Your church is but the fixture of men

Determining whose thumb we live under

Bring us together you fissure of men

If not then you must leave us alone

Cast off the tether – open the pen

Your flocks must find their way on their own
