Watch. Wait.

There will be a day when all this goes away

And pain once tattooed across bodies in blood

Will give way to different landscapes

Just pray the drugs will leave us one day

We stayed a step behind our better lives

As they tried to get their eulogies right

But they only had so much space, so much skin

To write about the life we’ve lived

But they were artists you know?

The skin was just canvas

No, more marble, that is carved, chipped away at

Until there is only exposed bone.

There was a sort of beauty to the pain though

Especially when the numbness came

When a tingling caught our heartbeats

Making them skip ever so slightly

Wait, stop. Explaining this is useless and

I just won't try to justify such foolishness

Because I have held my brothers blood in my hands

Way too many times

About as many as we've had to save each other’s lives

Because with blade kissed skin, and needle blessed veins

Who were we to play it safe?

Don’t worry it was ok

We were used to these chains

We could lead ourselves to slaughter every day

So, we didn't need to sugarcoat the taste of dirty water in our veins

Because there is no elegant way to say

That we tried to die on the side for fun

Through car crashes, blackouts, falling out, keeping pace

Matching each other’s pain was like a game

And death became a joke we understood the punchline to

So, it was hard not to laugh in its face...

So, we laughed, and laughed and cried and

Wondered why we woke up to find extinguished light

But still stayed so hungry for life

We spent so many sleepless nights

Trying to fight the ground

And it's no wonder we finally found

A way to walk around proud

A way to know of love, and keep our blood

Inside of our veins, no longer hungry

No longer willing to spill anything but

Heartbeat after beat after we beat our own games

These thoughts from our brains

Stepping out of our faded daze

Looking forward to some good old age

But there are times I do look back

Glance at old photographs, blood pacts, missing members of the pack

And think

What if we changed the past?

Avoided this fast track with the deadly backlash

But hindsight is just that

And this is where we’re at

Now with new shoes, hair do’s, clean pockets with clean cash

And a brighter future than what blinded us in the past

Now I won’t lie, it wasn't easy to fight

And we almost died

Way too many times

Just to finally learn

That we could survive
