A Lament for Mesopotamia

A vision of lost brotherhood

I see you
I see you black and bound
I see you on horseback riding

I hear the chain rattle along the ground
I hear the chaos near the auction block
I hear you breathing right beside me

Not self-love that drew me near
Long ago along the Tigris as we slept
Not with fear, but calm through the night's balm.

Some trick of time and of clime has changed me
From black and brown to white
From brother on the River in the wild wind
To wary warrior for a different cause.

I see Euphrates winding through time
I see you in the distance looking
I see you and me.
