a story about a kid and his mother

Little boy in hand, held so tightly
He doesn’t understand why you cry
At the way it all came and went too quickly
Innocence not lost
Just slowly ebbing dry

The store’s chime was a herald to the day
Of one among too few for your focused affection
To cavort and play with your red mopped baby
Ground to a halt at his enthusiastic presentation
The spoils of his master thievery

Oh mama you’ve enough days ahead
To waste your worry and spill your tears
‘Cause your boy jumped the homestead
Time to laugh and wash away your cares

The chime again mocking your perfect day
Breaking reverie from a memory quick to betray
Of nights in an empty house
When a tiny hand reached out for you
As if sleep were a roller coaster
And the only safety harness was you

Oh mama you’ve enough days ahead
To waste your worry and spill your tears
‘Cause your boy jumped the homestead
Time to laugh and wash away your cares

He looks up at you unsure what to do
Smiles like always though never saying a word
You wish the world knew he talks as fast as you
Like there’s no hope to rifle through them all
So you speak,
drawing the strings of your puppet small

Oh mama you’ve enough days ahead
To waste your worry and spill your tears
‘Cause your boy jumped the homestead
Time to laugh and wash away your cares

You know his promise is only words, not heart
But glad the shackles of crime torn
The path of innocence brought back to the start
In the image of a tiny man reborn
Who wants his mama’s tears stopped

Oh mama you’ve enough days ahead
To waste your worry and spill your tears
‘Cause your boy jumped the homestead
Time to laugh and wash away your cares
Mama, it’s time to laugh
Time to laugh, mama
Time to laugh
