Winter's Fool

I used to live deciduously

In the languid summer days

Allowing me to rest my soul

In the serenity of the warm

Windless mornings, the dusty

Afternoons stagnant with air

And live through the nights;

With plumage of the stars

And radiance of the moon

I’ll live on throughout the days

And nights of spring and autumn too

Without sleep — move at full speed

Until winter comes…

The cold fingers pluck the fire

From my eyes while the clouds

Rob them of the night’s meditation

I used to live deciduously,

Only breathing with the sun and stars

Now in the winters grip of cold fingers

I find stars in your eyes — an endless supply

I find radiance in your smile no sun can match

I find summer in you when you look at me

My fuel, my summer leaves.
