Dear Mom, This will be the first Mother's Day without you forever reminding me, as you fumbled to open some shiny box, “Lin, a gift wasn't necessary.”

This...

This here...

This here will

This here will be

This here will be my first

Mother's Day without you still breathing air...

This will be my first

Mother's Day without wondering where to take you...

The first Mother's Day without the Hallmark greeting

Or you always saying: “I love nice cards. It's the card that counts...”

This will...

This will be

This will be the first

Mother's Day without you forever reminding me:

As you fumbled to open some shiny box, “Lin, a gift wasn't necessary.”

But...

But you see

But you see, Mom,

But you see, Mom, you were a gift.

My Gift.

It goes beyond DNA, simple biology, or the fact that

I would not exist without you.

You were my gift because you gave me so much wisdom.

You were my gift because your support of my dreams seemed endless.

You were my gift because you learned to love me, unconditionally.

You were my gift because you hung tough, for 83 freakin' years!

You were my gift because I will always treasure the woman you were.

I never cared much

For these manmade, man-

Ordained or society-pressured holidays.

They make it seem as if we're supposed to

Show our love on particular days... when in reality, love

Should never be an assigned emotion... nor only displayed

On certain Sundays in May. Love...

Love should

Love should simply

Love should simply be a verb,

A 24/7; 365 day-a-year VERB!

This...

This piece right...

This piece right here is

My verb.

And so,

On this UnHappy

Occasion that flower shops,

Hallmark and society deem as

Mother's Day...”

I need not be reminded that

I will love and be grateful

For you always, Mom.

I will miss you so terribly on this day,

As I shall miss you for the rest

Of the days of my life.

That's it. That's all.

One Love.

Lin

p.s. I saw no need to buy a card this year.
