Die By The Cross

As the clouds drew in, your chest grew heavy —

Heavy and heavier still with the cross bearing down

On your neck, I hear it in your voice

You know.

What was once your foundation has crumbled into

The cinder and smoke that curtain your sins

And now?

The cross is your weapon of choice it seems

I see how you whet your blade on the rolling stone

The tongue, the tip and ink in which it lies

Bury your head in the analogies it holds

Cherish it now.

It will breed the destruction your pages aspire to

In the name of unholy ghosts and the almighty wreckage

That has accredited your debaucheries,

To document the novelties that anoint your brow

Own it as yours.

But dare to throw the book at innocents who watch

And the devil himself may shake

No soul is pure in their own revelation

But this is your psalm and every knee shall not bow

As no man may judge himself and no man may furnish rights

Which they do not possess

These ram’s horns and dove’s wings are not yours to bequeath another

Hold your sword and bare your cross

Sing your ballads and tell your stories to those who will hear them

But leave this sort of damnation for Armageddon.
