A poem about that someone you once met, for whom you were totally unprepared. Someone who succeeded in bypassing every one of your defenses without even trying.

You've broken through my defenses
Like Superman's kryptonite
You've disarmed me
Left me weaker, yet somehow stronger

Your eyes are full of light
Like children dancing on the playground
They dance in circles around me
Like it was the first day of summer

Your long dark locks
Hug your soft cheeks
Like curtains pulled back to reveal
Your beautiful face, at center stage

Your voice is like a gentle stream
Flowing over smooth stones
Your laughter, light ripples and splashes
Your singing like a waterfall

You've broken through my defenses
Like Superman's kryptonite
You've disarmed me
Made me forget years of pain and sorrow

When you're not present I look for you
I find myself hoping
Hoping you'll walk through the door
Hoping to see your smiling face

I love listening to you speak
It makes me forget everything else
Forget everything I was going to say
Somehow, it seems less important now

In a way we're still strangers
But I feel like I've known you a lifetime
My thoughts stray to you
And I wonder about your day

Meeting you has made me believe again
Believe in possibilities
Possibilities with origins in the distant past
Possibilities that became impossibilities, now reborn

Meeting you answered the question
"Could I love again as I once did,
Do I still have the capacity? "
I realize now I do, albeit cautiously

Spending time with you
Makes me feel like a teenager again
That awkward youngster
Fumbling with new affections

You've broken through my defenses
Like Superman's kryptonite
You've disarmed me
Made it alright to be me again

You really are captivating you know?
But sadly I feel another will hold you
Kiss you, embrace you and hold your hand
A part of me believes you deserve more than I could give

Your presence unlocked something in me
Unshackled my heart and mind
Even if just for a moment, freed to believe
That I might find love again

You've broken through my defenses
Like Superman's kryptonite
You've disarmed me
Dared me to step on the dance floor again

I stare at the phone wishing you would call
But reality tells me you won't
I would call you but I don't have your number
Perhaps it's all for the best

Emotions I have not felt in years
Now seem strange and unfamiliar
Loneliness was so all-encompassing
Hidden behind smiles and polite laughter

"She's coming bro just you wait and see!"
Words that no longer held meaning for me
Hope, faith, belief laid down and died
Until I met you that is

Our late night chats leave a smile on my face
Your childlike playfulness irresistible
Though our words stay mostly in the shallows
I hope they will find deeper waters

I know that I want to know you
The woman behind the shy self-conscious laugh
Whose eyes betray a deep intelligence
An invitation to endlessly profound conversation

You're like a well-kept secret
A gold mine waiting to give up its treasure
A wealth of hidden potential
Just waiting to be discovered

I fear I'll never know the depths of you
That you'll fade like a beautiful dream
Like a gentle mist that dissipates with the sun
Like the ocean absorbs the stream

Maybe I won't dance with you, hold you
Kiss you, protect you in my embrace
But I'm so glad that I met you
So glad your light touched my life

You've broken through my defenses
Like Superman's kryptonite
You've disarmed me
You woman of mystery
