Among the iron bars in the graveyard of rusty cars

Empty cans and broken glass, sits a deserted

Elephant cage where

Grimy bones quiver with maggots who

Lie awake

Leering at the barren lion’s den –

The kings left this hell long ago

His heart is still caught between the bars

Of the marred elephant cage

Where no memories of laughter remain

Only broken bones that never mended

His whip’s decay and a mangled top hat –

The ringleader has lost his cape

The glitter has grown to dust in this confetti dream

His heart is caught in the elephant cage

In the empty silence of the wind

There is no room left to breathe in here

Soon this heart will lie side by side

With battered bones and drunken dreams –

Who wouldn’t want the whip when the

Lashes lap up the leakage of his broken heart

If only leather lasted a lifetime and bones never broke

Maggots never yearned for flesh with such undisguised lust

And you never wished to live forever

Instead your heart could rest

Or perhaps you should have fled with lions before it was too late –

But here we are singing our jailbird blues

Of the ringleader who never thought he’d loose
