Then and now

Personal reflection

Then and now

In a former life
I was made of anger.
The way that rust is made of iron.
It corroded me.
I was poison.
I used to be made of dreams,
Like air, I filled the world
With my self
I went everywhere, free,
But insubstantial,
Of no consequence.
I once was made of hope,
The way children are.
I often could not breathe
Past the expectation filling my lungs.
I was reckless.
I felt unbreakable.
I tried to break me.
Like a whip cracking,
I tried to snap myself
I tried to break through the speed of sound.
Today I am serene
As a still lake
And you and our son
Are borne by my embrace.
