They were the years of innocence
They were the years of pretentious romantism...boyish chivalry
They were the years of letters and blossoms and careless whispers and spontaneity

At the desk in front sat a girl
Cool as a pansy and
Slender as a wisp of wheat she sat
Her presence glowing like a hallow
Her smile painfully sweet as t'was rear
Her eyes a pair of irresistibly charming brown pools
And her laughter a haunting melody that even the angels silenced
Oh, what beauty, the gods must have envied!

This girl was the terror of his life
For her look stilt his heart and his blood chilled
And her rebuke stang as a slap across the cheek

Yet his little heart beat for no other
For from the very first day their eyes crashed
She captured his soul and reigned like queen in her palace

But he was only a boy...clumsy...shy as the moon
And the language of cupid a twaddle alien
Yet his heart loved a girl to bits
A girl who couldn't decode the naive yearnings of a boy
A boy drowning in the mystic sweetness of her charms
And the freshness of her innocence

Many years later the boy met the girl
Only the boy was a man and the girl a woman
And she was a garland in another man's head and he a prince to another

And he remembered and she remembered
And they chose to forget

Only, the boy forgot to remember to forget
For how could he forget what he remembered
With every heartbeat of his longing heart?
