POEM FOR INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY

IT TAKES A LABOURER

By Joe Ching’ani-Malawi

All the garbage in the streets and homesteads

It takes a labourer to clear them

The foundations of single and multistory buildings

It takes a labourer to dig them

Even the feeder roads nicely rehabilitated and reshaped

It takes a labourer to make them

What about Africa’s green gold-Tobacco

It takes an ordinary labourer to toil throughout the processes

On the scattered Mines all over the world

It will take a labourer to bring forth any production-and profits too

Waking up every morning, walking to work

Barefoot, in the cold or scorching sun

And sometimes with nothing to eat at lunch break

clearing debris during natural calamities

mopping the floors in hospitals and offices

It takes a labourer to do our cheap yet energy demanding chores

But even if their wages are not accorded a blink,

One fact is sure:

Should an election result run neck and neck,

It will take a labourer

TO TIP THE SCALES!!!
