Insanity (Spoken Word)

The national discourse around current events is fueled with insanity. Let me define insanity for you. (Spoken Word Poetry)

What do you want me to say?

Do you want me to say I’m sorry?

Do you want me to write it?

Or spell it in my own blood?

What do you want me to do?

Do you want me yell? Cry?

Do you want me to stand like a statue?

Silent. As you pull me in opposite directions.

Because at this point, I’m just confused.

Because at one point I thought the color of all blood was red

That any bullet shot creates a gaping hole

But you keep telling me that it’s not the same

That if the shot is fired from the rising sun to where it sets

It’s a declaration against humanity

But if the sun rises blood red

You’re somehow saving the world from insanity

Let me define insanity for you

Insanity is placing a commodity value on human lives

It’s letting the right to safety depend on which side of an invisible line your feet lie

It’s mourning the innocent by justifying the death of other innocents

It’s allowing bodies of refugees to pile in the sea so you can use them to cross to the other side

It’s engineering the whole world to burn so you can use its ashes to fuel your own fire.

Is expecting me to apologize for everything I’ve never done

It’s pushing me to hide who I am behind who you want me to become

It’s using our backs to help yourself climb to the top

So what do you want me to say?
