If History has taught us anything
it is that we are reluctant pupils
We confuse nostalgia
with lessons that might offer us an education
With ever shrinking attention spans
hindsight becomes an unwanted invitation
to repeated deaths by boredom
We choose, or suffer from, a selective amnesia
and what we do recall
often falls victim to a penchant for exaggeration
In an attempt to cure our myopia
our imagination is often blurred
by lenses with prescriptions now outdated
We travel down roads paved long ago
and often miss the signs
that would lead us to our desired destination
We are slow to realize that we have traveled
too far in the wrong direction or, worse still,
passed a point of no return
If History has taught us anything
it is that signs serve no useful purpose
for those who would not read them
Though they point to some greater truth
it is futile if man in his arrogance will not pursue it
We might do well to pause for a moment
and reflect at this crosswalk of humanity
Stopping long enough to regain our bearings
we will discover our true heading
by acknowledging whence we came
