A Modern Fairy Tale Romance (Chapter 2: This is (NOT) my Idea!
So happy you could come.
So happy to be here.
How I’d like to run!
This is not my idea
This isn’t my idea
-This is my idea, The Swan Princess-
JOSH Campbell let out a very tiring and heavy sigh as he slumped down on his chair after a hard day at work. Rubbing his throbbing forehead, he closed his eyes and rest his head against the comfortable header of the chair.
“Damn. That guy is the worse. No passport, No identification card. Nothing about him! Yet, he could sings our National Anthem as easily! Just who the hell is he anyway?”
“Having a hard day, Inspector?”
A Sergeant-rank officer with black Ivy League haircut came in with two mugs of freshly brewed roasted black coffee. He had a deep cut scar on his left eyebrow, making him looked very intimidating and fearful.
Deep ocean blue eyes stared at the man as he handed one of the two mugs to his partner and walked to his own side of the desk and sat down.
“Thanks.” Josh inhaled the freshly brewed coffee and satisfyingly sighed.
Halfway sipping the wonderful coffee, Josh momentarily stopped when he felt eyes were on him. Turning to look at his partner, he raised an eyebrow.
The Sergeant looked at him with an amused grin and arms crossed on his chest. His own mug was untouched on the desk.
“So, who was that cute girl this morning? You know, the one who’d made you illegally turned the car around at the freakin’ traffic? Girlfriend? She’s cute.”
Josh instantly chocked on his hot coffee and spilt some of it on his uniform. He gave a long threatening glare at his partner, before whipping the coffee’s stained off his shirt with a tissue.
“She’s my deceased brother’s kid, you arse.”
“Whaat?! But you’re only like, twenty-seven! And she’s like sixteen!”
Josh snorted. “Twenty. And we are related. Just not by blood. My parents and Anya’s parents were childhood friends. When I was twelve, my parents died in a car accident. Anya’s father, Mark Romans, adopted me into his family. They’d let me keep my family’s name though. So technically, I’m like the ‘other’ older brother. Though since I was adopted into the family under Mark’s family, I am the ‘uncle’ instead. The young uncle, mind you.”
The Sergeant whistled. “Wow... How come you never told me any of these stuff?”
“You never asked.” Josh silently drank his coffee.
Silence fill in their shared office except of the constant ringing of the telephones outside.
“So... You’re the young uncle, eh?” At the mischievous tone of his partner, Josh immediately cringed.
Here we go.
“Yea. Got a problem with that?”
“Oh, no. None whatsoever. Just a sense of... Enviousness, is all.”
“I see.” Josh put away the mug to the side and retrieved a stack of reports he needed to fill in.
“So... You’re never like... You know..”
“Know...What?” Josh began to feel annoyed and irritated at his partner’s choice of words.
“Well, what I mean to say is, you being the younger uncle and she being young... Lady. You never feel like doing...Something? Anything? To your cute adopted niece? Cause technically, it’s not illegal for the two of you if you wanna get married or...”
A long pregnant silence.
“You are a disgusting pervert and an arse." Josh pointed his pen at the stack of papers on his partner’s table. “Fill in those. I want them back in an hour.”
“Aww, you no fun!”
“Speaking of fun...” Josh look at his wristwatch. “It’s already two o’clock. Where the hell is she?” He muttered at the last sentences, reaching for his cellphone.
Josh dialled a number and waited for the person to answer. After what it seemed to be a minute, the call went straight to the voice-mail.
“That’s odd. She always answers the phone after class.”
“Who? Your girlfriend? Maybe she’s on a date with her boyfriend and doesn’t want to be disturbed.”
“She doesn’t have one.” Josh sighed and dialled the number again.
“Oh, and I suppose you would know what colour of the bra she’s wearing today?”
"Dude! I should put you behind bars, man!”
Ignoring his partner’s jokes, Josh groaned before putting down his cellphone.
“Something not right here. I have a bad feeling about this.”
“Dude, chill out. She doesn’t pick up her phone. Big deal. What make you so sure something bad is happening to her just because she doesn’t picks up her ph-”
A sudden explosion at the front door of the station, interrupted the two men conversation.
“What the damn hell?!”
Josh grabbed his gun and heading for the door.
A male figure stood calmly at the entrance of the Police Station. He observed the situation carefully and breathed in deeply. The small explosive which he had planted earlier, was a mimic of the actual one.
An illusion that would make anyone within the perimeters to fall deeply into sleep.
It had been rather difficult to get into the Human World without the portal. After Aidan had told His Highness the King about how his one and only son had gone to the Other World and most probably got stuck there, the usually gentle King had been furious with the Prince and himself.
Three hours later after enduring the King’s wrath and long list of punishments for the Prince when he returned, Aidan had been given a mission by the King to find the missing Prince and bring him back.
The handsome butler made his way into the building, all the while carefully not to step on any of the sleeping bodies on the floor.
Like father, like son. Aidan smirked widely as his red eyes darkened.
behind the bars in the rather dirty and unhygienic single cell, was Prince Duke of Excalibell. He sat on the empty cold bed. His neighbour, a mean-looking muscular man with tattoo on the whole right side of his face, had been staring at him menacingly through the only thinned glass that separated them.
Duke lowered his gaze, not wanting to make any eye contact with the stranger. When he’d came in earlier, some of these fellows in the cells were making noises at him. Obscene noises that had made him cringed and shivered.
Back in Excalibell, there were no criminals — well there were criminals, but none of them were as obnoxious as these fellows.
Just then, he heard the sound of light footsteps approaching his cell.
“My, my. Look what you’ve gotten yourself into this time, Your Highness.”
Duke looked up, and his face instantly lightened up in glee.
“At your services, as always.” Aidan smiled and bowed his head slightly to the Prince.
“Aidan, I am so thankful you are here! But, wait. How did you know I was being kept imprisoned here?”
“Oh. you know I always have my ways to get what I want, Sir. Could you kindly step back for a moment?”
“Oh certainly, my good man.”
Duke nodded and took a few steps back. He watched as Aidan took out a magical elixir from his sleeves.
Aidan poured a couple of drops on the iron bars. It dissolved immediately.
Once it’s dissolved, he kicked the bars in order to make a room for the Prince to come out.
Duke brushed any dirt on his clothes. He smiled gratefully at his rescuer.
“Shall we go ahead, Sir?”
“Yes. I’ve had enough of—”
“Hey, Pretty boy! Get me out of here. NOW!” The mean-looking inmate beside Duke’s cell was stomping his fists against the bars.
“What a rude and loud fellow.” Duke frowned.
“Allow me to take care of him, Your Highness.”
Aidan moved toward the inmate’s cell, and stopped right in front of the cell.
The inmate grinned widely. His grins increased when Aidan took out the same coloured elixir from his sleeves — and then smashed it onto the hard floor.
Thick purple-pinkish smoke covered the whole dungeon.
When it dissolved, the inmate man and all of the others, including Josh and his partner-in-crime who had came to the scene just in time, accidentally inhaled the smoke, and were in a deep sleep in an instant.
Meanwhile, the Prince and his butler were nowhere to be found.
“You are absolutely sure that you’d just knocked them out with sleeping bombs, Aidan?” Duke asked persistently for what seemed to be the tenth times as they casually walked outside of the building like nothing had happened at all.
“Absolutely, Your Highness. But I suppose if it pleases you.” Aidan suddenly stopped walking. He turned his body around to look at the building and snapped his fingers.
The Police Station was once again lively and filled with sounds.
“You used the ‘Memory Erased’ Spell, didn’t you?”
“Precisely, Sir. They will continue with their daily routines and won’t remember a thing that had happened earlier, us included. The people in this world are so easy to manipulate.”
“It’s not their faults that magic is no longer part of their life.” Duke walked on ahead. Just then, he suddenly remembered something.
Slowing his pacts, Duke glanced at his butler. “How did you managed to come into this world, Aidan? I remembered losing connection with you and Laxuz while I was in the portal. No matter how many times I’d called out or pressed the emergency device, there was no respond whatsoever. Before I knew it, I’d landed myself in a young maiden’s chamber bedroom and had being accused as a pervert!”
“I know, Sir. I had been there to witness and listened to your unfortunate accusation.”
“Regardless, I’d managed to get myself into this world using one of Laxuz’s newly invention.” He took out a small yet broken bun-shaped device from his pocket.
“Laxuz had already warned me that this device has not yet being tested. He has proven his point. This device is now useless.”
Duke cringed at the broken and useless device. “And how did you managed to find me?”
“Oh, that. Through a contact of a... Friend. A troublesome firecracker.”
At the mentioned of ‘friend’, Duke stopped, raised one suspicious eyebrow at him and crossed his arms.
“You’d used ‘Qiche’ abilities to enter someone’s mind and stole their memories without permission again, didn’t you?”
“I had to, Sir. Your safety is my top priority. If the only way for me to get to you is by using the Qiche, then so be it.”
Duke sighed deeply. In a way, he couldn’t complain about his butler’s loyalty and dedication to him.
Aidan was after all, the greatest and powerful Magician in all of Excalibell. Not to mention, he was the youngest Magician to be given the title ‘Gran Mago’ — the highest rank in the Magician Guild — at the age of thirteen and a genius of his generations.
After Aidan had been entitled as the Gran Mago, the King had personally invited him to the castle to be the Prince’s Magic Instructor.
As the two of them were grown close over the years, Aidan had been promoted by the King to become the Prince’s Butler-in-training. Once he had completed his training for five years, Aidan had since then, became a butler and personal bodyguard to the Crown Prince.
Being the Butler of the Heir to the throne, it was his job to keep the Prince safe from any harms and threats whatsoever, even if it means he had to get his hands dirty.
“This friend of yours, do I get to meet him at least once? That is, if you have not wiped his memories yet.”
“It’s actually a ‘she’, Sir. And about that...” The Excalibell Prince and his butler came to a full stop in front of an abandoned run-down warehouse.
Duke was stunned at the sight of the warehouse.
Aidan cleared his voice. “While I was trying to find out your whereabouts, I’d learnt a few significant things about the place that we are currently in. First and foremost, this is indeed the Other World. Thank God we landed safely. Unfortunately, we are nowhere nearby Lady Marian’s territories.”
“What?” Duke’s eyes widened, in shock.
“This place is a town called ‘HillView’. If I have to estimate the distance between here and Lady Marian’s place, it would be like the distance between Excalibell and our neighbour country, Mayland.”
“T-That’s too far off the chart!”
“Indeed. That’s not all of the bad news. Right after you’d entered the portal, something else had also entered the portal. According to Laxuz, it was some kind of a virus. He is currently working on it as we speak. I believe now is the time to say that we are officially stranded in this place for a while.”
“Hold on. Stranded?”
“All communications that allows us to connect Excalibell, failed. Believe me, I’ve tried everything.”
Duke took in a long deep breath and exhaled. “Father is going to kill me!”
“Believe me, he will. Should I remind you how upset he was when I ’d told him you once again disobeyed his wish? Added to that, you were supposed to dine with him.”
“If I’d known this would happened, I won’t come here in the first place!”
Aidan coughed lightly. “In any case, we just have to wait for them to come and get us, since there is no other choice. Rest assure, Sir. I’ve prepared for the worse-case scenario.”
Aidan stepped forward and opened the warehouse doors. The interior warehouse was dark, dusty and practically empty.
Aidan walked in ease, followed by Duke. The two men walked deeper into the warehouse and in darkness, Aidan summoned a small beam of light to lead the way.
“Why are we in here exactly?” Duke asked, after twenty minutes of walking straight with only the small light as their guide.
“To meet with the person who plays a part of rescuing you earlier, Sir. By the way, please stand closely behind me. I don’t wish for your ears to suffer from bleeding.”
Duke looked at his butler with a strange expression. Did he just said suffer from bleeding?
The Prince nodded anyway. He’d trusted his butler after all these years. Surely it couldn’t be something bad, right?
The two came to a halt in front of a small cage. Aidan took out a small pocket watch from his sleeve and started counting the seconds.
Anya counted every last drop of the water leaking from an unknown source somewhere above her head. She had long ago regained her consciousness after being suddenly knocked out by someone who had claimed to be her new Literature Studies Lecturer, Mr. Abel Fox.
Abel Fox, my foot! He’s just a weirdo! Hell, weird couldn’t even begin to describe him. He’s a demon! A demon who had kidnapped her, taken her in God knows where and locked her in...
Okay... Take a deep breath, Anya. Now she felt scared. Very scared and claustrophobic at the cramped space she was in.
Taking a long deep breath while trying to calm down her nerves, she decided to act, now or never.
“Hey,” Anya burst out desperately. Her nerves increasing. Her plan to be calm crushed to pieces as panic began to take over her. “Hey! Whoever locked me up in this stupid cage better be prepared for some blood cause once I’m out, I’m gonna TEAR YOU APART!”
"My,my. What colourful words came from the mouth of a young maiden.”
Her head hit the bars with a loud thunk. When she looked up, she saw with a familiar face.
Anya gritted her teeth at the man who had kidnapped her. Her eyes moved to the slightly younger man standing behind him. Her temper came back in full swing.
“You’re the damn pervert in my wardrobe! I should have known. Wait until I get my hands on you! I’ll-”
her words were cut off by the magical appearance of a thick tape on her mouth. Anya curled her fingers around the bars, and clenched it tightly. She glared with so much hatred at the genius magician, who simply shook his head.
Behind him, Duke who had been watching Anya’s outburst at them, felt sorry for her.
Taking a step away from Aidan, he approached the cage cautiously, despite his butler’s warning.
“Nice to meet you again, Milady.” He greeted softly. “I’d apologised for what had happened earlier this morning. I swear on my beloved mother’s grave, I had no intentions to break into your private chamber whatsoever.”
Anya made muffled noises.
“She said, ‘what make you think I would believe everything that you said?’, Sir.”
“Very well.” Duke looked at his butler. “Release her and let her talk, Aidan.”
Aidan frowned deeply before he snapped his finger and the tape on her mouth and the cage disappeared.
Smiling thankfully at his butler, Duke turned his head back to face with the maiden who was in the sitting position, and who was glaring dangerously at Aidan.
Duke wondered why. He was just about to ask ‘what’s wrong’ when he saw the trails of heavy chains that were wrapped around her ankles and her wrists.
“My apologies, Your Highness. Unfortunately, I’ve seen how violently this young woman can be, and I will not risk having you harmed nor injured under my surveillance. Especially, while we are at our disadvantages.”
Olive eyes looked at the Anya deeply in the eyes. “What’s your name, fair maiden?”
“Anya.” She answered, hesitatingly.
“Miss Anya. If you promise to hear us out till the end without any interruptions, I will ask him to release you from these chains. Do you promise?”
Anya glared at him, then at Aidan. Slowly, she nodded. True to his words, Duke had his butler, to his dismay, to unchain her.
Anya let out a sigh she’d been holding until now. Glaring at the two men, she began to rub her aching joints on the wrists.
After a minute of deep silence between them, Duke decided to introduce himself.
“I am Prince Duke of Excalibell. This is my butler, Aidan Timbell. We halt from a magical Kingdom of Excalibell in another world. The reason why we came here, is because I’d wished to meet with my beloved, Marian, lives in this world.”
Duke paused, waiting for any sort of reactions from the young woman. When he found none, he continued.
“Usually, when I entered the portal that linked between my world and here, I would always ended up in Marian’s place or somewhere in her neighbourhood, one that I’m already familiar with. However,” Duke sighed. “Due to an incident, I’d ended up in your wardrobe.”
And had been poorly mistaken as a pervert, he wanted to add.
“Just a while ago, Aidan had mentioned to me that this place is nowhere near to Marian’s home, not even her town. Moreover, we’ve lost all communications to my Kingdom and it seems that we’ll be stuck here for the time being. The two of us would love nothing more if you could help us get back to our own world. In order to do that, we need to go to Marian’s place because it’s the only place that is directly connected to my Kingdom. That’s the end of the story.”
Anya who had been listening to the story, suddenly started to giggle. She didn’t know if she should be laughing to a crazy man’s stupid tale or cried because she’s stuck with these two lunatics who might kill her, or even both because she had gone insane!
Taking a deep breath, the two men were already prepared and expecting her to burst out in anger like she had done earlier.
But when Anya had suddenly went down on her knees and bowed her head before them, Duke had been in a greater shock!
Even Aidan raised an eyebrow.
“I swear to God if you let me go safe and sound now I will not tell a soul what crazy stuff you’ve just told me or anything else that had happened today!”
“T-that’s not what I... Oh dear.” Duke sighed again and put one hand on his forehead.
“Your Highness, do you think it’s wise to ask this maiden for a help?”
Duke nodded firmly. Taking a deep breath, he looked at Anya and said in a harsh and demanding tone.
“You will help us. If you won’t, I will not hesitate to ask Aidan to end your life right here, right now.”
As soon after those words left his mouth, Aidan had a dagger pointed at her neck.
“Are you threatening me... Prince?” Anya glared at the Prince.
“Yes. Unfortunately for you, I am desperate to get back to my Kingdom as soon as possible, and I will not hesitate to act upon things, even if it is beneath me and against my beliefs.”
Aidan added, “Think of it this way, Miss Romans. The sooner you help us, the faster we get out of your life. It is a fair trade,no?”
Anya scowled deeply. What should I do? What should I do?! Live and help them? Or die and —
Suddenly, the image of her family popped into her mind. “All right. I’ll help you find your precious.... Marian.”
Duke who had looked coldly at her a while ago, now grabbing her hands and shook them rapidly with a gleeful smile.
“Thank you so much, Miss Anya! We’ll be looking forward working with you.”
This guy... Does he has split personalities or something? Anya snatched her hands away and gave him a dirty glare.
Aidan on the other hand, approached those two with clapping hands and a thinned smile.
“I’m glad everything worked out in the end for both of us. Miss Romans, in order to ensure that you won’t run or break from the deal,” He took one of her hand and kissed the palm.
“W-What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Anya’s face turned red as beetroot at his unexpected gesture.
Anya gasped when there were marks on her palm where he had just kissed — a Crescent moon and fourteen pointed stars glowed on her skin before they disappeared.
“Those marks are a contract. As long as you have those marks, I shall be monitoring your every moves. It takes a special spell to cast it, and another spell undo it. So do not ever think you could get away from us so easily.” Aidan said with a foxy smile and released her hand.
Anya held onto her head, eyes widened.
Damn it! This has ought to be a bad dream. A nightmare! She must have fallen asleep in the class. Why hasn’t Emma or Steve wakes her up yet? Or Mr. Hayes and his famous bull’s eye chalk-on-the-forehead technique? Anything to wake her up from this awfully dreadful nightmare!
“If you’re done with debating yourself whether this is just a nightmare or not, we need to get going. It’s already late evening.”
Aidan’s voice shook her up. Anya checked on her watch: Six-Forty.
IT was seven o’clock sharp by the time Anya reached home. Her head was throbbing for the lack of belief of what had happened today.
Before they’d left, Aidan had told her that the whole of today’s event had been erased by him with magic. Meaningto say, no perverted burglar was found in her wardrobe, nor was there a seducing voice that he knew she’d enjoyed listening to the deep voice of ‘Mr.Fox’.
Everything had been done, erased and forgotten by magic. Except her.
Only she knew the truth.
Recalling back Aidan’s harsh words earlier when he had her cornered without his Royal Charge noticed, he’d warned her that should she dared to tell anyone, anyone at all, he would not hesitate to hurt or even kill the people who are precious to her.
All for the sake of protecting the Prince and Excalibell’s good grace. That had certainly made her shivered and swore she would never tell anyone.
Anya took a deep breath and turned the knob of the front door to her apartment.
shutting the front door and locked it, Anya was in the middle of putting her shoes inside the racks neatly when...
“Welcome home.” A soothing seductive voice greeted her that instantly made her stopped on her track.
Turning her head slowly, Anya gasped loudly.
No. It can’t be.
Her mouth dropped instantly when she saw a figure who was standing at the living room, placing the plates neatly on the table, preparing for dinner with his ever so politely smile at her was.
Anya never screamed so loud in her whole life.
“Honey?” Rosy’s came out in rush from the kitchen to her daughter’s side, who looked like she had just seen the Devil himself.
“Honey, are you okay? Are you all right? What happened?”
One trembled finger pointed at the man who pretended to be in shocked as well.
“Mama, w-what is he doing here?”
Rosy looked at her daughter strangely. “Anya dear, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten who they are?”
“What?” Anya hissed.
“Oh, you silly child! Aunt Penny’s children? Jelly Bean’s Fun Park? Remember? You always played with them at the park when you were little! Anyway, Aunt Penny sent them over to live with us, while she and Uncle Henry went on their world’s tour vacations. While they’re staying with us, I’d asked them to help me out at the Bakery. Honestly, Anya didn’t you hear me when I told you about this last night?”
“I...I must have been zoned out when you’d told me that. Sorry, Mama.” Wait. If he’s here then—"
“The hot shower was awesome!”
Walking toward them from one of the twins’ bedrooms, with towel hanging around his shoulders, wearing a white t-shirt and shorts was Duke.
“Oh, welcome home, Miss Anya!”
For the million times of that day, Anya felt like knocking her head against the wall.
Dear Diary, my peaceful quiet life has officially ends today.
Someone please kill me now!
