A Mother’s Work Is Never Done

In a few short months Canada will be celebrating its 150th birthday on July 1, 2017.

On the eve of Canada’s 144th birthday I wrote Prince William enclosing a copy of my poem A Mother’s Work Is Never Done in anticipation of his and The Duchess of Cambridge’s Royal Canadian Tour’s visit to my hometown of Ottawa, Ontario on July 1st 2011 and what would have also been his mother Princess Diana’s 50th birthday.

I received a reply a few weeks later from Saint James Palace informing me that His Royal Highness not only read “A Mother’s Work Is Never Done” but also wanted to thank me for my thoughtful letter and beautiful poem.

I have always believed that when it comes to our mothers we should reflect upon our most cherished memories, because whether they are still with us or not, they will always live in our hearts.

So, for those still fortunate enough to have their mother, God bless her! And for all who are not as blessed, this is for you. I hope it brings you joy.

A Mother’s Work Is Never Done

There are people, we cannot replace,

debts we can never repay,

times only we remember.

I recall your losing more than could be given,

giving more than could be repaid,

more times, than can be remembered.

My dreams are bountiful,

your misgivings fueled my desire to succeed,

your patience sustained me through adversity.

I always strived to do the same.

When that which we had seems forever lost,

I often look to the evening sky,

for a glimpse of the brightest star.

It assures me a mother’s work is never done

and my journey, has just begun.
