Where Monarchs Gather

/ poetry

A biology field trip, over 50 years ago, alerted me to the hibernating secrets of the Monarch butterfly.  In New Zealand the remoteness of our islands means that the Monarchs cannot migrate to warmer climes and so they gather together in secret, sheltered places to winter over. The following poem is about this natural phenomenem and a bit more ..

there are places of congregation

where they cluster in shrubberies

hanging together in slim outline

like dead leaves in winter shadows

these are secret spots

known only to a few

outside their circle

it was whispered that

the old cathedral's gardens

were such a place

where coupling youth hung out

beyond the church of good behaviour

- oblivious to the nearby

gatherings of kings
